Bone density scanning, also called dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA or DEXA) or bone densitometry, is an enhanced form of x-ray technology that is used to measure bone loss. DEXA is today's established standard for measuring bone mineral density (BMD).
Osteoporosis is a progressive disease characterized by decreased bone density and increased bone fragility. It is a complex disease that may progress silently for decades – there may be no symptoms until fractures occur. Bone loss is the major risk factor that can be modified in mid-life to reduce fracture risk. Early detection is essential.
EMMC has a state-of-the-art Bone Densitometry machine made by General Electric. A complete body scan takes three minutes and requires no more from you than to lay down during the scan. The scan has a low level x-ray and is very safe.
In the United States, over 28 million people are at high risk of developing osteoporosis. Up to 1.5 million fractures a year are attributable to osteoporosis. Women are at the greatest risk. One third of Caucasian women over the age of 50 have osteoporosis, yet nearly 80% remain undiagnosed. After menopause, a woman’s risk of suffering an osteoporotic spine or femur fracture is 30% or three times that of a man’s.
Bone density testing is strongly recommended if you:
