Who is at risk?

Diabetes is not contagious. People cannot "catch" it from each other. However, certain factors can increase one's risk of developing diabetes. People who have family members with diabetes (especially type 2 diabetes ), who are overweight, or who are African American, Hispanic, or Native American are all at greater risk of developing diabetes.

Any pregnant woman can get gestational diabetes (GDM), but some women have an increased risk. Women who are over 30 years old, are obese, or have a family history of diabetes have the greatest chance of getting GDM. GDM occurs in up to 3% of all pregnant women, but is much more common among Hispanic Americans, African Americans, and Native Americans. If you have GDM in one pregnancy, you are likely to have it again in later pregnancies. GDM usually can not be prevented.
