What is a hemoglobin A1c?

A hemoglobin A1c, most commonly referred to as an A1c, is a blood test that measures your average blood sugar over the past 2 to 3 months.  This is the most widely used test to measures a person's overall diabetes control.  Most physicians have this test done every 3 to 6 months on their patients who have diabetes.
