How do doctors diagnose diabetes?

The diagnosis of diabetes is done through a blood test.  Each test must be confirmed on another day by using any of the three tests below.  The new standard for diagnosis is:

  1. Symptoms of diabetes plus a plasma glucose reading of greater than or equal to 200 mg/dl any time of day without regard to time since last meal.
  2. A fasting plasma glucose reading of greater than or equal to 126 mg/dl (fasting is defined as no caloric intake for at least 8 hours).
  3. An oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) with a two hour postload glucose of greater than or equal to 200 mg/dl.
