What is Diabetes?Diabetes Mellitus is a disease in which the body cannot produce insulin or can not use insulin properly. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas that helps the body use glucose (sugar) as a fuel. Insulin acts as a "key" that unlocks the "doors" to cells and allows glucose to enter. When glucose is inside, cells can use it as a fuel for energy. Without the help of insulin, the glucose can not enter the cells, so it stays in the blood, causing high blood glucose levels. |
