What causes diabetes?Type 1 diabetes is thought to be a consequence of problems in the body's immune system, causing its antibodies to destroy the beta cells in the pancreas. Scientists don't yet know why this happens. But most evidence supports the idea of genetic susceptibility (heredity), with race most likely playing a role. Environmental factors, such as viruses, stress or some food allergies can also trigger the onset of Type 1 diabetes. As with Type 1, the risk factors for persons with Type 2 diabetes include genetic susceptibility, or heredity. In addition, there is scientific evidence that factors such as aging, obesity, a sedentary lifestyle, and the chronic use of certain medications can trigger Type 2 diabetes. |
